Smoke alarms in demand
The Graafschap Fire Department in partnership with MI Prevention provides smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for those who cannot afford them or have physical difficulty with self-installation.
In 2014, the program initially provided free detectors for any resident who made a request. This program worked flawlessly until recent times, when detectors became harder to get from MI Prevention.
Currently, GFD is out of stock and has a waiting list of 24 households requesting detectors. According to Fire Chief DenBleyker, “We have had an order in for 6 months.” Mi Prevention is slightly behind in fulfilling orders due to the fact their funding was not guaranteed in this year’s budget. Once the state budget was approved, a large order was placed with the manufacturer for fulfillment. The wait continues.
If you can provide your own detectors, we will be happy to come out and conduct an alarm location survey and even install your alarms. For those awaiting alarms from us, we can place you on the list and get to you as soon as possible. Please contact us at 616-396-4060 or email here if you are (or know of someone who is) in need of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms.
