New firefighters take agility test

On Saturday, two probationary firefighters completed an agility test to determine their fitness and motor skill levels. This test is administered to any new firefighters who did not receive their initial training at a local fire academy sponsored by GFD. Breckin Bigelow and Alex Nevarez took their initial training in college programs several years ago.

The skill stations were modeled after the State of Michigan’s final exam for Firefighter 1 & 2. Using props and equipment from the Graafschap Fire station, six different challenges were presented to the candidates.

Ropes, knots, & tool hoisting was the first station. After tying several knots, the candidate raised a hoseline up the training tower/silo to the catwalk. This was immediately followed by PPE/SCBA checks and donning. Candidates wore this gear and were “on air” for the rest of the test.

Carrying, placing, and climbing a ground ladder was next. Spotters were used in this evolution for a safety factor. Next, the candidates caught their breath while explaining how to call a “MAYDAY” and how they would call for assistance.

A common skill is attachment of hose to the pump and deployment of the handline. Although this is usually done in teams of two, this task is routinely done by one firefighter due to staffing levels.

The final station is the manikin drag of 100 feet. By this time the candidate is winded and tired, but must push through all that to complete the test.

Both candidates worked hard and finished strong. They are one step closer to meeting the requirements of full membership with the Graafschap Fire Department.
