Community turns out for pancakes!

On July 4th, residents came to the Graafschap Fire Department’s annual pancake breakfast. Weeks of planning culminated with 4 hours of cooking and serving 1365 people. This is an all-hands on deck event for the firefighters, since this is the only fundraiser of the year. A large portion of the proceeds go to local and regional charities.

Volunteers from the fire department, with assistance from Fillmore and Laketown elected officials opened the breakfast at 6 am and finished serving at 10. Business sponsors were very generous this year by donating services, supplies, and/or cash. Included in that group of sponsors are Biggby Coffee, Dunes View Quick Stop, Lawrence Towing, Pro Temp, Quincy Street Meats, Republic Waste, Shoreline Container, and West Michigan Uniform.

All fire apparatus was on display, with Ladder 751 taking center stage with a large American flag flying overhead. Information on several Community Risk Reduction programs were also available under the tent. Information on the August 5th fire levy, which does not increase taxes, was placed on each table in the fire bay.

A couple of improvements to the process this year seemed well received by all supporters. A 501C non-profit was formed, allowing business sponsors to deduct their donations. Also, the suggested monetary donation at the pay table was dropped and a “pay what you can” approach was adopted. This seemed to be very popular with residents. Donations were up from last year from this very generous community.
