2025 Michigan Fire Fatality Statistics Released

The Michigan State Fire Marshall’s Office has released the fire fatality statistics for 2025.

The data shows lack of working smoke alarms even though 46,970 alarms were installed statewide. Smoking, electrical overloads, and improper space heating were the leading causes of these fatal fires.

Graafschap Fire Department has a smoke/carbon monoxide detector installation program available to residents who can’t afford or have the ability make the installations themselves. The detectors in this program are the 10-year battery models. Pre-wired units require an electrician or the homeowner to install. Currently, we are waiting for a replenishment shipment of detectors from MI Prevention. A waiting list for installation has been established, so please reach out and we will put you on the list.

If you have your own new alarms, we gladly come out and evaluate your residence for detector placement. We will even assist in the installation of the battery-powered detectors. We can also assist in annual battery replacement if you are unable to access your detectors.
